How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions however the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.
Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly if they're an Bosch model like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.
The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. audi a1 car key should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common part that is found across the Audi 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
